Competition format: Pool system. Every competitor fights everyone in his division. Matches are 5 minutes long. Judo/jujitsu uniform must be worn. No shoes allowed.
Competition rules: Mat Madness is strictly a ground grappling event with submissions and Judo pins. Arm locks (wrist, elbow and shoulder), non twisting leg locks (ankle, knee and hip) and all chokes are allowed. Competitors begin each match facing each other and kneeling on one or both knees. Competitors will be warned for passivity. With the third warning, the referee will stop the match, place the guilty party on his fours with his opponent to the side or behind, and resume the match. In the event of lack of progress from both competitors, they will be asked to resume the match from the starting position. Matches are won by making your opponent submit or by pinning him for 25 seconds. In the event of a draw, the winner will be decided by the referee(s). The referee’s decision will be based on near scores -either pins less than 25 seconds or near submissions. The referee has the discretion to call for a one minute overtime period to decide a winner.
Warnings: The following acts will result in a warning from the referee and may result in immediate disqualification from the match or tournament depending on the severity of the act and the intention of the competitor: head butting, biting, striking, kicking, gouging, bending the fingers or toes, bending the head backwards, twisting leg locks, unsportsmanlike behavior, intentional injury, slamming, use of vulgar language or being confrontational with the referee. The referee may stop the match if he feels the safety of the fighters is in jeopardy or if no progress is being made.
Divisions: Novice- less than one year grappling experience
or Judo green belt and below.
Advanced- more than one year grappling experience or Judo brown belt
and above.
Competitors will be grouped together to provide pools of 4-7 fighters
with no more than a 15-20 lb. range between the lightest and heaviest
in the pool.
